Shoes tell a lot about a person. No other article of clothing we wear is so encompassing and revealing of who we are, what we do, and what we like. Their design alone portrays an individual sense of style. With a simple glance we can often tell what era or decade they belong too, whether they are platforms, Oxfords, Buster Browns, or Jordan’s. Their wear tells a lot about where we’ve been and the condition of the road we’ve traveled. Shoes can tell the world what your occupation is; combat boots, pumps, loafers, steel-toed boots, cowboy boots, or spiked stilettos. Some of us have more shoes than we will ever wear in our lifetime, while others count themselves lucky to own a single raggedy pair.
Regardless of your background or style, we’ve all come across a pair of shoes in our lives that hold special meaning to us, and they don’t necessarily have to be our own. They can represent a special event or time in our lives, or of the lives of a person we love and cherish. Sometimes they don’t mark a specific time or place but, rather, the accumulation of a journey well traveled. What better way to immortalize this favorite pair of shoes than to have their story told through art and verse?

About the Artist
Alisha K. Ard is a proud mother of two, and an accomplished artist. She is best known for her shoe portraits, which were featured in Best of America Watermedia Artists Vol. II in 2010. Working in acrylics, she captures the personality of each pair - the vibrant hues, the reflection of light, and the intricate details. One of her favorite pieces was a chair she painted for “Chairish the Future 2010”, an auction supporting the Furniture Bank of Atlanta, to help raise funds to buy beds for children of impoverished homes.
